![]() ![]() The wildcard in any comics-to-movie comparison is Harley Quinn, which only feels appropriate. Like Black Mask, his screen character is pretty much in league with the comic book original violence-wise. Victor Zsasz, meanwhile, is a character whose entire modus operandi is extreme cruelty, so it should come as no surprise that his comic book incarnation has been surprisingly violent, from trying to slash Batgirl’s throat to stabbing Alfred an almost-successful murder attempt. Both of the movie’s villains, Black Mask and Victor Zsasz, have particularly violent comic book pasts, at least in terms of implication, and their actions on the page are certainly of a piece with what takes place on the big screen Black Mask, after all, is the villain who had Catwoman’s sister eat her own husband after he’d been murdered in front of her, making someone’s face being cut off seem almost quaint.įor that matter, a character’s face being cut off may, potentially, be a comic book reference - in the rebooted “New 52” universe of DC’s post-2011 output, the Joker debuted in a story that saw his face sliced off he later reattached it with hooks and leather straps, because … comics. That said, it would be incorrect to say that Birds of Prey is entirely inconsistent with the characters it features when it comes to the violence on show. ![]() That’s not to say that there weren’t moments that would have read as more violent and gory on screen than on the comic book page - the abstraction of artwork allows for someone being shot by a crossbow to read as more sanitized than it might otherwise appear, after all. It wasn’t just Black Canary, leading martial artist, who fell into this trap Lady Shiva, officially the most deadly fighter in DC’s comic book universe, was briefly part of the team, and she also didn’t significantly up the violence quota. For the first 24 years of the property’s comic book existence, the series was not especially more violent than any other superhero comic book, and far more tame than many when it came to the level of damage felt by the various heroes and villains it featured, despite repeatedly featuring characters whose reputations relied on just how dangerous they reportedly were. In three of its four primary comic book incarnations to date, DC’s Birds of Prey has been a franchise that certainly offered a lot of action, but action that was closer to a PG-13 rating than anything too graphic. Yet, it’s also not totally in keeping with the comic book canon that inspired Birds of Prey - well … not entirely. ![]() This is called isothermal water and it allows lake turnover to occur in the fall and spring. Large, deep lakes will certainly stratify each summer, while smaller, shallow lakes may be too windblown to form distinct thermal layers.ĭuring winter, lakes de-stratify and the temperature is uniform. The extent to which lakes stratify during the summer depends on the size of the lake. The hot summer heat causes the epilimnion’s temperature to increase and create these three layers. In fact, the most intense stratification happens between late spring and early fall. Lake stratification doesn’t occur year-round. When Does Lake Stratification Occur? Image courtesy of Britannica If your lake home is in a warmer climate, these numbers could be higher. For example, on Lake Erie, the epilimnion is around 22 degrees Celsius while the thermocline is 10 degrees, and the hypolimnion is 4 degrees. The Great Lakes were created by the movement of glaciers (large sheets of ice) over land, around 10000 years ago. ![]() Specific temperatures of these three layers depend on the lake’s climate. Finally, the hypolimnion is the deepest and coldest layer that extends to the lake floor. Its main purpose is to provide a thermal barrier between the first and third layers. The thermocline (or metalimnion) is the middle layer which changes depth throughout the day. turnover, not more than five percent of the productive factory workers, or. Because it’s exposed to the sun and mixed with wind and waves, it’s the hottest and least dense layer. When lake stratification occurs, it creates three layers with distinct temperatures. ![]() Because denser materials are heavier, the cooler, denser water sinks to the bottom while the warmer, less dense water remains on top. As demonstrated by water and oil, most liquids with different densities don’t mix well. This happens because changes in temperature, during warm and cold months, cause changes in the water’s density. These stratified layers each have a different temperature, the top layer being the warmest and the bottom layer being the coldest. But when it comes to liquids (such as lakes), the colder the water, the denser. In short, lake stratification occurs when lakes form three distinct thermal layers. (This is why ice cubes float in a glass of water). However, the exception to this rule is solid water which paradoxically, is less dense than liquid water due to its unique chemical structure. This is why most substances become heavier when frozen. When liquid cools, molecules move closer together and become denser. In short, lake stratification occurs when lakes form three distinct thermal layers.

This plant is a stem plant that grows relatively slow. MoneywortĪ friend of mine recommended this plant as he has grown Moneywort in his goldfish aquarium and seen success. I recommend attaching both the big and small plants to a piece of wood or a rock to keep them in one place. The plant propagates by growing tiny plants at the end of its leaves that eventually fall and float around the tank. It’s a rather slow grower and also can survive without adding liquid fertilizer, especially in a goldfish aquarium as these fish are messy. This plant is a beginner plant that does well in low to medium lighting and does not need additional CO2. That’s great in a goldfish tank because there is nothing to dig up for them. Just like Anubias, this plant does better when the roots are not buried in the substrate. The leaves are strong and goldfish tend to leave them alone most of the time. In the same way, if we don't test for hormones and dissolved organic compounds, it doesn't mean they don't exist.Arguably the most popular plant in the hobby is the Java fern. If I don't test for nitrates, it doesn't mean they don't exist. The plants will help to clean the water, but you are in control of the water quality as a whole. ![]() Clear water does not mean clean water and we MUST ensure the best water quality for our fish, for their health and wellbeing.ĥ0% weekly water changes are BARE MINIMUM on an appropriately stocked tank. Just because you don't test these things, doesn't mean they aren't there. For this reason WATER CHANGES ARE VITAL! Regardless of your water readings. They don't consume hormones, dissolved organic compounds or produce electrolytes and minerals that the fish need in order to thrive. Plants consume ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. No chemical you can buy, no understocking, no amount of plants can replace water changes. Yes!! I cannot stress this enough! Nothing, nothing, beats a water change. If your tank is bare bottomed, you can still have plants! Glasses or terracotta pots filled with substrate and planted look beautiful, or you could tie some java fern and anubias to some pebbles or wood and pop them in. These are inert substrates and will need nutrients to be added manually, so the roots can feed from the Substrate. You can plant your plants in sand or Gravel. Still possible, but tricky, so I would avoid if you like to move things around often. If you are a fan of rescaping, this option makes that tricky. I use John Innes no.3 and LOVE the stuff! Be sure to cap it (cover with gravel or sand) and cap it well or you will pop it and it will be horrendously messy. With a good cap, it's Goldfish friendly and plant perfect. I love what good old dirt does for my plants. They will each offer slightly differing benefits, so explore all your options if going this route. ![]() There are many brands and all will give good growth results. Some plants are a healthy snack for Goldfish, which leads me on to the next question. They compete with algae for light and nutrients and if your photoperiod is good, the plants will usually win the race! Which means, less algae or risk of algae. They provide decoration in the tank, without risk of injury to the fish, as can be caused by plastic and rough decor. They're also a great place for eggs to be laid and fertilised. Females can be harassed pretty intensely when they're full of eggs and releasing pheromones, lots of plants enables them to hide away from the boys a little. They also provide cover, should there be any aggression, usually breeding related. This is not a bad thing, it is quite the opposite (assuming ammonia and nitrite are reading 0ppm, of course!), as it means the water is less toxic to your fish. Some heavily planted tanks will show no nitrate reading, even though a cycle is established and healthy. It also means the plants are using the fish waste, thus cleaning the water. What better reason could you want for keeping them? Oh okay, you want something a little more scientific ( I should inform you that it is morning and I am in pre-coffee mode!).įish waste is plant fertiliser, this benefits the plants as it gives them lots of lovely nutrients to encourage lush growth. |
